Arrests During 'Rejuvenate China Culturally'

The Sixth Plenum of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)was held and large
numbers of petitionersacross the nation took to Beijing, hoping to convey
their grievances to authorities.Although the plenary session's topic
was"Rejuvenating the Country with Culture,"claiming to meet people's
spiritual and cultural needs, most people visiting the meeting site were
taken by police.

With the Sixth Plenary Session of the CCP Congress heldin Beijing, many
petitioners across the country once againbroke through obstacles to get to
Beijing to try expresstheir grievances to high-level CCP officials. Before
the opening of the Session, nearly 10,000 peoplevisited the Beijing
Petition Office every day.

Voice of America reported, on October 15, many petitionersfrom Shanghai,
Heilongjiang, Henan and other placeswent to the location of the Sixth
Plenary Session -Beijing Jingxi Hotel on West Chang'an Avenue, despite the
strict interrogation by police, trying to reflect their grievances to CCP
leadership. However, most of them have been arrested by the police.

Petitioners stated that authorities sent many police to set upcheckpoints
along the way, strictly investigating pedestrians. When they found petition
materials, petitioners were takenaway by force to a special detention
center, Jiujingzhuang.Petitioners claimed that at least 30 full buses of
petitionerswere sent to Jiujingzhuang that day.

Boxun Network said that on the morning of October 15,Mao Hengfeng, a
petitioner from Shanghai, was walking on West Junbo Road, but was arrested
by police.Even some tourists were taken away too.

Mao Hengfeng: "I will reflect the situation when I see leaders, what will I
reflect when I see police?!I've to go around the police. So I did not show
up, I waswalking on the other side of the road, they ran up to get me."

On October 13, Mao Hengfeng released videos, accusing the authorities of
persecution.Mao Hengfeng mentioned that she tried to request treatmentof
families of martyrs due to her mother insistence, but was denied the right
to work and pregnancy, after forced abortion. In 2000, the authorities
colluded with the hospitaland poisoned her mother to death. Her three
daughters are also deprived of the rightto go to school, and have stayed at
home for over 10 years.

Mao Hengfeng: "I suffered numerous tortures. I was detainedin psychiatric
prisons, labor camps, dark prisons, even hotel. On a train or on the street
the police would beat and humiliateme, strip me naked, and insult me in
various ways."

In addition to Mao Hengfeng, other petitioners from Shanghaialso added
their indictment of grievances in the video.

Petition Villagers in Beijing from Guangdong, Chongqing,Henan and Sichuan,
told NTD Television reportersthat the police would come to arrest people
every night,and it was "terrible."

Mrs. Ren, whose house was demolished, is from Henan. She personally
experienced all kinds of injustice, and was completely disappointed by the
authorities. She decided not to petition anymore.

Mrs. Ren: "I used to think that our country (government)was very good, I
did not think (it would be like this). My father was a veteran officer,
since 1938.I cried at my father's grave,

'Why did you not help the KMT, but the CCP?What have you fought for?!'"

Mainland media reports that the Sixth Central Committeeproposed the slogan
to 'Rejuvenate China Culturally,'"to meet people's spiritual and cultural
needs."Ironically, during the so-called 'sensitive period'of the meeting,
not only were many petitioners arrested, but also many on CCP's blacklist
were strictly controlled.

A well-known human rights activist in Beijing, Hu Jia,had been detained by
CCP for many years, because of exposing the truth of AIDS in Henan. He was
just released in June.Hu told NTD reporters, in these two days, the Beijing
situation has become very serious, and many people have been under house
arrest. When hewent out, the usually following him two cars became three.

Hu Jia: "It (CCP) talked about "culture," which should befor the purpose of
maintaining and strengthening its rule, and brainwashing people, so they'd
support the rulers. I'mafraid it (CCP) just utilizes a good name to
imprison culture."

On October 12, many petitioners from Hebeialso released a video
online, expressing the injustice and grievances brought upon themfor many
years by the CCP.
