community continue. Many German politicians asked 『Release Ai Weiwei'in
German media. In recent weeks, many rights lawyers and writers have been
harassedand their freedom limited by public security units orthey have even
been sentenced to forced labor camps. Are the intellectuals the new target
for suppression?

On April 12, EU issued a statement, voicing concernabout the deteriorating
human rights in China.

EU foreign policy High Representative,Paddy Ashdown said in a statement
that recentlymany Chinese human rights lawyers, writers, journalists,

tooand was soon questioned by police night after night.

Anhuei-based political analyst Xuan Changwei, was summoned last week by
local police and toldthat his political commentary on the Internet wasin
violation of state law. Another writer Zhang Linwas banned from publishing
and leaving his district.

People in media from Hong Kong and Mainlandbelieve that Chinese regime's
large-scale arrestsare a sign that now intellectuals are the target.

Jin Zhong (Editor in Chief, Admiralty, Hong Kong):"This time they arrested
Ai Weiwei at Beijing airportshowing a trend that their targets are
intellectuals. They feel that intellectuals like Ai Weiweican have a great
impact on others."
Former editor of Shaanxi TV,
Ma Xiaoming thinksthat the Chinese Communists Party (CCP) threatensto
arrest intellectuals who are assisting petitionerswhich will only lead to
more intense, even violent, resistance from people.

Ma Xiaoming (former Shaanxi TV editor): "Cuttingpeople off the path of
peaceful operations will inducemore intense, even violent and devastating
resistance. The result would be very alarming."

camp.He was once an art student, working in Ai's studio.Last February, Wei
Qiang was arrestedwhile attending Chinese jasmine rally in Beijing.

Xinhua News Agency published an articlea few days ago, claiming that artist
Ai Weiwei wasa suspect for plagiarizing the work of Yue Luping. On April 11,
Yue declared thathe was being used by Xinhua as a hit man for Ai.Yue asked
Xinhua to not misuse his name.

Yue Lu Ping: "I've never used the term plagiarism.I don't want them to turn
this into a plagiarismincident. Imbalance in resource allocation can bea
problem in the creative environment of China, but I do not want this event
to become a tool whichXinhua News Agency uses to attack Ai Weiwei."(Voice
of Radio Free Asia)

Author Li Ping told Hong Kong Apple Daily:"An editorial in Best Chinese
points out that there isno friction between Ai Weiwei and Yue Luping."Li is
ashamed of Xinhua's behavior and showedhis intellectual character by
strongly supporting Aiin many of his interviews with foreign media.

Rights activist Shao Jiang told Voice of America:"Ai Weiwei is not missing.
His being accusedof economic crimes is another solid proofthat the CCP is
persecuting its own citizens."
