Is Ai Weiwei's Release Related to Wen Jiabao's Visit to Europe?

Recently, the renowned Chinese artiest Ai Weiweihas been frequently
headlines on global media.Since his freedom is still limited and he is not
allowedto accept media interviews. Many western media believe Ai Weiwei's
releasewas Chinese regime's attempt to influencewestern media during Wen
Jiabao's visit to Europe.

Late night, June 22, renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiweiwas released on bail.
This has been breaking newsfor days in the Western media. From June 22-24,
2011,it is estimated to have over 4000 reports in CanadianEnglish media
alone on Ai Weiwei's release.

After Ai Weiwei was released, Western governmentsand human rights
organizations made their statements. The U.S. Dept. of State hopes that
Chinese regimerelease all detained dissidents. German ChancellorAngela
Merkel welcomed this action, but reiteratedthat this was only the first
step. Amnesty Internationalsays Ai must be given a full freedom, without
being illegally placed on house arrest.

The conditions for Ai's release were not to leave Beijing;silent about how
the regime treated him;no media interview. The best recording media
couldobtain so far is his voice thanking friends in Hong Kong.

"I heard, I heard, I'm very touched.Hong Kong is a world of Chinese, but
also a very rational, very conscientious society. I'm very touched forwhat
each person did: not only for me, but for a belief.A society should go
toward more just, more humane, right?…it was a narrow escape, can't say too
much, since I can't receive interviews, but must show my respect and
gratitude."

Gao Ying, Ai's mother at 78, smiled for the 1st timein 2 months. She said
when she first saw her son,he was unkempt, ungroomed, like a wild man.She
said Ai lost ~20 pounds. On the night of June 22,under the cameras of the
regime and internationalmedia spotlight, many Ai's friends came to visit
him.

According to the CCP (Chinese Communist Party)official media, Ai pleaded
guilty to tax evasion.Due to his good attitude and chronic illness, he
wasreleased on bail. U.S.-based Chinese legal expertKong Jierong commented
that Ai Weiwei was neverformally charged, neither formally arrested,so he
did not have to accept any charges.

Zhang Weiguo, editor-in-chief of Dongxiang magazinesaid, "Among the ten
sentences the CCP speaks, not a single word is believable. If (people)
believe what it says, then the world is finish!Don't expect that the CCP
would abide by the law, humanity or conscience. There is no use
speakingthese things to the CCP, as it is like speaking to deaf ears."

Germany's largest media Bilt commented, Ai's releasewould obviously make
Wen's European visit easier, but fearing for losing its face, the CCP will
never admitthat Ai's release has anything to do with Wen's trip.

On June 24, Premier Wen Jiabao left for Europe.German Chancellor Angela
Merkel stressed thatAi Weiwei's case must be dealt in a lawful
andtransparent fashion. German Foreign MinisterWesterwelle said he will
continue to include Ai andother right activists in the meeting agenda with
Wen.However, Bilt reported that the CCP tried hard prior tothe meeting to
exclude Ai's case from the agenda.

Renowned media commentator Lin Baohua said,"Wen had to do something to
please the Westto exchange for Western countries' support. When Wen Jiabao
goes abroad, he also worries thatthe Western media and politicians will
pressure him."

Many people worry that Ai Weiwei might have beenused by the CCP to
manipulate Western opinions, just like the case of Chinese rights lawyer Gao
Zhisheng. In 2010, before President Hu Jintao's visit to the U.S.,Gao
Zhisheng suddenly returned home after missingfor more than a year, but
right after Hu's visit,Gao disappeared again. Gao Zhisheng and Ai
Weiweiboth spoke out for disadvantaged groups in Chinaand openly criticized
the CCP.

Many worry that after Wen Jiabao's visit,Ai will disappear again. An article
Ai wrote in 2008 might answer this question. He wrote, "Sealing one's mouth
is the real characteristicsof socialism - one that is authentically made in
China."
